Marysville Public Schools Invests in the Health of its Students and Staff with Recent Purchase of Innovative Electrostatic Sprayer System
To address our rising absenteeism at the peak of the flu season, Marysville Public Schools deployed the Clorox® Total 360® System to help keep students and staff healthy year-round.
MARYSVILLE, Mich., March 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Marysville Public Schools is proud to be the first public school system in St. Clair County to use the award-winning Clorox® Total 360® System to help combat harmful germs and bacteria across our schools, this flu season and beyond. The system helps Marysville Public Schools effectively safeguard against the bacteria, viruses and pathogens that can negatively impact student and staff health, and contribute to absenteeism rates, helping us achieve our goal of keeping our learning environment safe and healthy.
According to the latest seasonal influenza report from the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS), the state of Michigan continues to experience a particularly unforgiving flu season, with a total of 1,014 influenza-related hospitalizations and 216 facility-specific outbreaks reported since the start of the season. A total of 14 of these outbreaks happened in schools across Michigan, resulting in numerous forced closures and as a result, negative financial implications related to losses in productivity, high student and teacher absenteeism and increased labor to adequately clean up1.
The illness-causing viruses and bacteria that lead to these outbreaks like cold, influenza and highly-contagious stomach bugs like norovirus, which also resulted in a number of illnesses in Michigan last year, can survive on surfaces anywhere from days to months2. Therefore, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces is a critical first step in protecting our schools.
Marysville Public Schools uses the Clorox® Total 360® System across all five of our schools to help protect the health and safety of all our staff and 2,800 students by allowing us to maintain a clean learning environment year-round. We currently use the system on a bi-weekly basis, in addition to our existing manual cleaning and disinfecting protocols, across our classrooms, cafeterias, restrooms, administrative offices, high school locker room and teacher breakrooms.
"At the beginning of this calendar year, we saw a sudden spike in reported illness among our students and staff and ended up borrowing the Clorox® Total 360® System from another educational facility that was using it to treat one of its development centers," says Michael Roehl Buildings and Grounds Director, Marysville Public Schools. "We managed to control the outbreak, quickly and effectively, and purchased our own Clorox® Total 360® System in February. In less than a week our custodial staff was fully trained on how to use the system and we were able to treat all three of our elementary schools, middle school and high school in a short amount of time."
The Clorox® Total 360® System uses patented electrostatic technology to atomize, charge, and deliver trusted Clorox® disinfecting and sanitizing solutions onto both commonly-touched and typically hard-to-reach surfaces with a force stronger than gravity, enabling the Marysville Public Schools custodial staff to cover more surfaces in less time. The system, intuitively designed with the user in mind, can cover up to 18,000 sq. ft. per hour providing surface coverage up to four times faster and using up to 65 percent times less solution than traditional cleaners, allowing facilities to quickly and comprehensively cover surfaces where harmful germs and pathogens often reside.
"Our custodial staff could not be happier about our investment in the Clorox® Total 360® System and we continue to receive positive feedback, particularly about the system's short turnaround time and ease-of-use," says Roehl. "After hearing the feedback and seeing the system being put to such great use, the Marysville Public Schools Superintendent and school board are now eager to purchase a system for each building in the network."
