Dedicated in October 1991, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is the nation's monument to officers who have died in the line of duty. Engraving Day takes place each April to symbolically commemorate the service and sacrifice of all the fallen officers whose names are engraved on the Memorial.
The 316 names being engraved this spring include 152 officers who were killed in 2010, plus 164 recently discovered officers who died in previous years. All 316 names will be formally dedicated on the Memorial during the 23rd Annual Candlelight Vigil on the evening of May 13, during National Police Week. After this year's names are engraved, there will be a total of 19,298 officers honored on the Memorial.
Trooper Brown's name is being engraved on Panel 19-East, Line 27, of the Memorial, along with the following names: City Marshal A. E. Cook, Como (CO) Marshals Office, EOW: April 7, 1984; Officer Billy Clardy, Jr., Huntsville (AL) Police Department, EOW: May 3, 1978; Officer Thor Soderberg, Chicago (IL) Police Department, EOW: July 7, 2010; Deputy Sheriff Kory Dahlvig, Vilas County (WI) Sheriff's Office, EOW: April 25, 2010; and Officer Christopher Upton, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, EOW: March 5, 2010.
