Maryland Health Care Commission Names Kaiser Permanente 2014 Best HMO Plan
Health leader Receives Top Performer Award
ROCKVILLE, Md., Dec. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Maryland Health Care Commission's (MHCC) 2014 Quality Report ranked Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States as the highest scoring health maintenance organization (HMO) in the state of Maryland and recognized the organization as a Top Performer. The health plan received the highest score for Overall Performance, surpassing all other HMO plans offered.
"We are delighted to receive this year's Top Performer award from the Maryland Health Care Commission," says Bernadette Loftus, MD, Associate Executive Director for The Permanente Medical Group. "Our more than 1,000 excellent Permanente physicians deliver the highest quality, most convenient care offered across DC, Maryland and Virginia. This award from MHCC, on top of all the other quality and service awards we have received this year, is additional validation of our Number 1 position among all health plans in this geography." The detailed quality and performance comparisons are sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and remain a trusted measurement of patient-centered care and healthcare research.
Kaiser Permanente's scores exceeded the ratings of six other health plans in the category of Overall Rating of Health Benefit Plan, surpassing both the statewide and national average. In addition to performing well in listed categories, KPMAS is working with the MHCC to evaluate new areas for improvement and ways to provide high quality, value-based care for Kaiser Permanente members.
The Top Performer designation was rated on two initiatives, Member Experience and Satisfaction. One of the measures is coordination of care, which is determined by the percentage of adult members who said their personal doctor is "always" informed and up-to-date on the care they receive from health providers. Kaiser Permanente scored 85 percent compared to the Maryland HMO/POS average of 77 percent.
Kaiser Permanente received scores above the state average in the following measures:
