JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Andrew Jackson High School, the oldest fully accredited high school in Duval County hosted Mr. Martin Luther King III and U.S. Congresswoman Corrine Brown on Tuesday, March 10th for a visit with local high school students and nine City Year Jacksonville AmeriCorps members who have dedicated a year of their lives to full-time service in some of Jacksonville's most challenging schools. Mr. King and Rep. Brown briefly toured the facility to learn more about the interventions that City Year AmeriCorps members perform and to see the work of Mrs. Sabrina Hall, a Math teacher and finalist for the Duval County School District's teacher of the year, first hand. Additionally Mr. King and Rep. Brown met with the City Year Florida Blue Team serving at AJHS and more than 20 AJHS students to discuss the importance of voting – and doing so early - and continuing their education. The students asked questions of Mr. King and Rep. Brown ranging from what they felt about race relations in the United States today to what setbacks they have overcome when trying to reach their goals. As his final remarks, Mr. King quoted Horace Mann saying, "Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity," emphasizing that you can make change even just around the corner in your neighborhood.
