Martin Cauchon Joins Heenan Blaikie
MONTREAL, Feb. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Heenan Blaikie is pleased to announce that the Honourable Martin Cauchon, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, will be joining the firm as a partner. Mr. Cauchon, who will be based in Montreal, will leverage his vast experience to the benefit of local and foreign businesses that wish to seize opportunities offered by the knowledge-based economy and market globalization.
In addition to supporting his colleagues across the country and playing a role on the international scene, Mr. Cauchon will team up with Heenan Blaikie's Plan Nord experts to serve companies looking for business opportunities and partnerships. Mr. Cauchon will draw upon his in-depth knowledge of the Chinese market to help develop and implement Heenan Blaikie's China strategy.

Mr. Cauchon has distinguished himself throughout his political career, holding a number of high profile positions within the federal government. As Secretary of State (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec) from January 1996 to January 2002, he supported small to medium-sized businesses and various other parties involved in the economic development of the province.
He was also the Minister of National Revenue from August 1999 to January 2002 as well as Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada from January 2002 to December 2003. In this role, Mr. Cauchon rose to prominence through his involvement in human rights issues. He also successfully passed a bill to modernize the Criminal Code with respect to the criminal liability of organizations, while also taking into consideration problems linked to fraud in Canadian financial markets.
Prior to his political career, Mr. Cauchon practised civil and commercial litigation law from 1985 to 1993. Since 2004, he has practised commercial law with another large law firm.
Among his new colleagues at Heenan Blaikie, Mr. Cauchon will be working with the former Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, in whose Cabinet he served in many ministerial roles, including as Minister responsible for Quebec. He will also join former Quebec Premier Pierre Marc Johnson, and many other renowned personalities, including Mr. Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee.
