ABOUT MARTHA McSHANE STARR

Recognized for her expertise in Crisis Management Intervention, Martha M. Starr, M.A., BCETS, is currently the President/Owner and Traumatic Stress Specialist for Starr Consulting Services, providing private counseling services targeting traumatic stress disorder.  As an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alabama, Ms. Starr became a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress and realized her true calling in counseling.  She helps victims of traumatic incidents – including natural and man-made disasters, car accidents, or violent crimes – readjust and acclimate to their lives.  In the event of a stressful encounter, for example, the University of Alabama crisis management experts suggest that victims take simple steps on their own to relax, listen to soothing music, exercise, take walks and talk to someone they trust.  One of Ms. Starr's career highlights was being so instrumental in helping individuals cope at Ground Zero, during the after-effects of 9/11.  She is a "trained trainer" and member of the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF), where she teaches intervention in a variety of applications.  She is called upon to respond to major and minor disasters in her area for consultation.  She also does contract work for the military regarding traumatic stress, training military members heading off to war.  Ms. Starr has been conducting research on ways to help prevent and minimize the effects of traumatic events to inhibit the potential for post-traumatic stress disorder.  She received her M.A. degree in Counseling, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in 2000.  Ms. Starr currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama, where she enjoys reading, gardening, camping and hiking.
