WASHINGTON and NEW YORK and LONDON, Nov. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As a leader in business intelligence, MarketResearch.com is pleased to offer some insights into Thanksgiving travel expectations for 2015.
Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. The five-day holiday span occurs from the Wednesday before Thanksgiving through the Sunday that follows. The day before Thanksgiving, the day of, and the Sunday after are some of the most popular travel days of the year — and 2015 will be no exception.
In 2014, 46.3 million people traveled in the United States during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. This was the highest number of travelers since 2007. There was a steady increase in travelers each year from 2008 through 2014, and 2015 is expected to continue the trend of increasing travel.
The most common mode of transportation last year was automotive at 89.1%, or approximately 41.3 million travelers, followed by air at 7.7%. It wasn't surprising that automotive transportation was the most common form of travel, since gas prices in November 2014 averaged $2.85 per gallon, which was lower than prices had been since 2009. This year, we are seeing average prices hover around $2.32 for November, and it's likely that many travelers will opt for auto transportation this year, too.
Distance also plays a large role in why people choose to drive during the Thanksgiving weekend. The average travel distance in 2014 for the weekend was 549 miles round trip.
Air transportation cannot be ignored, though. Airports will be extremely crowded on November 25 and 29 as families travel to and from their weekend destinations. Last year, air travel for Thanksgiving was at its highest level since 2007, with 3.55 million Americans flying.
