RICHMOND, Va., July 30, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Markel Corporation (NYSE:MKL) reported operating revenues of $2.4 billion for the second quarter of 2019 compared to $2.0 billion for the second quarter of 2018. Operating revenues were $4.9 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2019 compared to operating revenues of $3.6 billion for the same period of 2018. Comprehensive income to shareholders was $623.3 million for the second quarter of 2019 compared to $164.3 million for the second quarter of 2018. Comprehensive income to shareholders was $1.4 billion for the six months ended June 30, 2019 compared to a comprehensive loss to shareholders of $10.5 million for the same period of 2018. Diluted net income per share was $36.07 for the quarter ended June 30, 2019 compared to $19.97 for the second quarter of 2018. Diluted net income per share was $78.85 for the six months ended June 30, 2019 compared to $15.72 for the same period of 2018. The combined ratio was 95% for the second quarter of 2019 compared to 92% for the second quarter of 2018. Book value per common share outstanding was $751.94 at June 30, 2019, up 15% from $653.85 at December 31, 2018.
