LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- To help connect Americans to the best banks and accounts of 2017, leading personal finance website, GOBankingRates, is releasing its annual "Best Banks" rankings. Results for each of the Best Bank categories will go live on Jan. 9, 2017.

Here's your sneak peek of our list of best banks.

To determine the winning institutions, GOBankingRates surveyed the FDIC's list of banks sorted by asset size, excluding non-active institutions, investment banks and any institutions that require customers to use investment services to access commercial bank accounts. Of the banks surveyed, 28 are online-only and 72 are brick-and-mortar institutions. GOBankingRates assessed these financial institutions to determine the best banks in five categories:

Best Online Bank
Best National Bank
Best Savings Account
Best Checking Account
Best CD Account

The following critical factors were considered among the criteria GOBankingRates used to determine the winners of the Best Banks of 2017 study:

Interest rates
Monthly fees
Minimum balance requirements
Customer service
Accessibility
