Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia partnered with Project Home to select ten deserving pilot families for the program. A comprehensive Energy Audit was conducted before specifying improvements to address health/safety/structural concerns and reduce operational/energy costs. In alignment with the traditional Habitat model, program homeowners were required to contribute "sweat equity hours" in exchange for the upgrades. Mark Group donated over 120 hours of skilled labor to seal and insulate five of these pilot homes to ENERGY STAR® standards. Additionally, Mark Group collaborated with Habitat to develop educational literature for volunteers to offer simple tips for energy-savings and healthy habits in their homes.
Frank Monaghan, Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia Executive Director states, "our priority is to stabilize homeowners in their homes by making key critical repairs, providing weatherization services to lower utility bills and giving the home a facelift through exterior improvements. We believe this will yield the highest impact on quality of life, stability and sense of pride for both the homeowner and the neighborhood as a whole."
Upgraded homes saw a reduction in air infiltration between 10%-33%. Those percentages translated into a projected annual savings of approximately $200 in heating costs and lifetime savings of approximately $4,000. Homeowners with electricity upgrades such as lighting and appliances saw a projected annual savings of $166 and lifetime savings of $1,374.
