DENVER, July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- After nearly two decades, Marjie Harbrecht, M.D., is stepping down as CEO of HealthTeamWorks®. Under Dr. Harbrecht's exemplary leadership and alongside a team of highly talented staff, Harbrecht grew the organization from inception to what it has become today – a pioneer and leader in physician practice transformation. Bert Miuccio, with over 30 years of experience in healthcare innovation and business development, assumed the role of CEO for HealthTeamWorks® in June.
During Dr. Harbrecht's tenure with the organization, HealthTeamWorks® became one of the first organizations to engage and support physicians in advancing new delivery models such as Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH). Through the Colorado PCMH Multi-payer Pilot and other important initiatives, Dr. Harbrecht was instrumental in shaping critical collaborative improvement efforts to change how care is delivered and paid for. By assisting practices and health systems in implementing system-wide changes focused on keeping patients healthier and lowering the cost of care, HealthTeamWorks®' innovative work has made significant impacts across Colorado and the nation.
"I am proud of what HealthTeamWorks®, Colorado and the nation have accomplished over the last several decades to advance healthcare delivery," shares Dr. Harbrecht. "As organizations and leaders, we've come a long way from simply talking about the need to redesign healthcare to actually developing consensus on potential solutions and moving towards more wide-scale implementation."
Harbrecht is known as one of the nation's foremost leaders and innovators in practice transformation, and under her leadership, HealthTeamWorks® developed critical programs to proactively prepare physicians for success in the future.
"With Dr. Harbrecht at the helm, HealthTeamWorks® has been able to push the envelope and successfully bring payers and providers together to test new ways of delivering and paying for healthcare," explains Dave Ehrenberger, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Avista Adventist Hospital and Integrated Physician Network, and Board Chair for HealthTeamWorks®. "Prior to the Mulit-payer pilot, the concept of PCMH was relatively unknown and now many providers have or are adopting medical home concepts in their practice to improve care and lower costs."
Dr. Harbrecht is stepping down as CEO and transitioning to the role of Chief Medical and Innovation Officer where she will continue to support HealthTeamWorks® under the leadership of newly appointed CEO, Bert Miuccio.
Bert Miuccio joins HealthTeamWorks® with over 30 years of expertise as a senior leader of healthcare, technology and social impact organizations, including experience as the CEO of three separate start-up companies. His extensive experience in healthcare business development and operational growth well-positions him to take HealthTeamWorks® to the next level in expansion, productivity and innovation.
"Bert's understanding of healthcare transformation combined with his ability to foster collaboration, advance organizations and build consensus makes him an excellent fit as the next HealthTeamWorks® CEO," states Ehrenberger. "HealthTeamWorks®' work in PCMH development and support services for physician groups has laid the groundwork for more expansive system-wide transformation in the future and Bert can help us make more rapid improvement a reality."
Optimizing the delivery of care in the primary care practice and coordinating care across the integrated delivery system are fundamental to realizing the Triple Aim of better population health, better care for patients and a less costly delivery system. "Thanks to Marjie and others who are determined to change our broken system, it's not a matter of should we do things differently, it's a matter of we must do things differently and now," shares Miuccio. "I believe we're going to see the pace of transformation increase dramatically in the years to come."
HealthTeamWorks® is a leader in implementing and evaluating evidence-based care through redesign and culture change at the practice, community and healthcare system level. According to Miuccio, "It's my job to make sure HealthTeamWorks® continues to play a critical role in supporting patients, providers, health systems, government agencies, employers and insurers in making sustainable changes that continuously improve population health and the overall performance of our healthcare system."
