JAKARTA, Indonesia, May 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Indonesia is poised to become a pivotal player in the global maritime industry during President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) tenure, local media quoted IMO secretary-general Lim Ki-tack as saying.
"Your president knows exactly what you should do, and what area you should improve. He made a good presentation at the IMO. He knows exactly at that point," Lim said.
Widodo has repeatedly mentioned his intention of making Indonesia the main hub for international maritime transportation. The president has started this journey by fostering the development of world-class harbours across the archipelago and by creating (11 so far) new bonded logistic warehouses to enhance the country's competitiveness and reduce the complexity of logistics.
Lim also suggested that Indonesia should engage in more strategic bilateral partnerships with other countries that have more expertise in the maritime industry to speed up the process even further.
