Mariner Investment Group Names Marx Bowens Of CRT Capital To Silvermine Rates Trading Team
Significant Hire Enhances Mariner's Ability to Capture Growing Opportunity in Rates Trading
NEW YORK, May 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Mariner Investment Group, the global alternative asset manager, today announced that it has named Marx Bowens to Mariner's Silvermine team as a Portfolio Manager focusing on a variety of rates strategies. Mr. Bowens brings a strong track record in rates trading and joins Mariner from CRT Capital where he was the Head of the Rates Department, a group that he built and managed. The addition of Mr. Bowens is the latest in a series of measures Mariner has taken to capture what it believes is a growing opportunity in rates trading.
The Silvermine team, which began trading in 2005, seeks to produce strong risk-adjusted returns by capitalizing on investments in the largest liquid sovereign debt, related interest rate derivative and foreign exchange markets. Mr. Bowens will focus on yield curve, duration, basis, cross-market and FX strategies in the U.S., Canada and Euro zone. Mr. Bowens also brings a long history with several members of the Silvermine Team with whom he previously worked while at RBS Americas (formerly Greenwich Capital), including Silvermine's Head Portfolio Manager, Jack Poulson.
"Marx brings a storied career and reputation as a trader with a proven ability to run a successful rates operation over a number of years. He has also demonstrated a clear aptitude for generating differentiated, value-added returns," said Basil Williams, Mariner's co-CIO who oversees Mariner's rates strategies. "We believe that we have entered a strong environment for rates trading that will play out over the next 2-3 years. As the policies of the four major central banks diverge, we believe that rates trading strategies will be positioned to offer meaningful returns as they benefit from volatility. These circumstances, however, call for astute trading ability rather than passive investment, so we are excited to have Marx join our Silvermine team."
"I am very pleased to join Mariner's Silvermine team and to have the opportunity to be reunited with former colleagues whom I consider among the most talented in the rates business," said Mr. Bowens. "I also believe that Mariner is well positioned to capitalize on this opportunity with its deep bench of experienced rates traders and strong risk discipline."
Mr. Bowens brings more than 18 years of trading experience. At CRT Capital, he founded the Rates Department and built it into a successful dealership in U.S. Treasury and Agency debt. Mr. Bowens managed a department of 10 traders, 12 salespeople and 3 government strategists. He was also the driving force behind the creation of CRT's first-in-class technology infrastructure. At CRT, Mr. Bowens was the primary risk taker and the market maker in the 10-year maturity sector in U.S. Treasuries. Prior to joining CRT, Mr. Bowens was the Head of Macro Trading for RBS Americas. He was a successful Treasury trader at RBS (formerly Greenwich Capital) during his tenure at the firm and earned internal recognition for his role in 2007, 2008 and mid-2009. Prior to this role, Mr. Bowens worked for the Macro Proprietary Trading Group and for Mr. Poulson on the International Arbitrage Desk at Greenwich Capital. He has experience trading U.S., European, Canadian and Japanese interest rates and FX markets. Mr. Bowens holds a B.S. degree in Economics and Mathematics from Bowdoin College, and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Westport Weston Family Y.
