Maria Dimitrioou Barnhart, Ph.D., is recognized by Continental Who's Who
EL SOBRANTE, Calif., Nov. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Maria Dimitrioou Barnhart, Ph.D., is recognized by Continental Who's Who as a Pinnacle Lifetime Member in the Psychology field.
Dr. Barnhart serves as a Clinical Psychologist in her own practice. She brings extensive expertise in the areas of evaluations, diagnosis, and treatment for severe mental illness and mental disorders, as well as family and relationship counseling to her role.
"Since I was five years old, I wanted to help people," Dr. Barnhart said. "I even remember listening to a woman with a disabled child and helping her when I was young. I love having a private practice, and having patients say to me that they 'never felt as good as [they] feel now in [their] whole life!" or, "I used to be in and out of the hospital, but I have not been hospitalized since I became your patient."
Dr. Barnhart moved from Cyprus to the United States at age 26, with two children, a limited understanding of English, and a 6th grade education. In addition to her private practice, she worked as a psychologist for 2 years for the California Department of Developmental Services and 11 years with the California Department of Corrections. While working there, she also had a part-time private practice. For the past 11 years, she has been devoted to her private practice. Dr. Barnhart is particularly renowned as an expert in psychotherapy, evaluations, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness as well as family and relationship therapy.
"The key to my success is being committed to helping people, having empathy and the gift of a good memory," Dr. Barnhart said.
Dr. Barnhart earned her Ph.D. in 1992 prior to establishing her practice.
In recognition of her outstanding accomplishments in the field, Dr. Barnhart was named a 2017 Top Doctor in Antioch, California.
"With a wealth of experience to call on, Dr. Barnhart is a clinical psychologist in high demand yet she is always happy to discuss conditions and her services with patients and where appropriate their families," the Top Doctor Committee states. "This praiseworthy attitude makes her popular with her peers and patients alike."
"My advice to those entering the field is that you have to 'really want to do it,'" Dr. Barnhart said.
Dr. Barnhart dedicates this recognition to her fifth and sixth grade teacher, Takis Trelos. She also dedicates this recognition to her husband, Daniel Barnhart, who is a Navy veteran, and to her two sons, Peter and Michael, and thanks them for their continuing love and support.
