Marcum LLP and Connecticut Technology Council Announce Marcum Tech Top 40 Winners
Alexion Pharmaceuticals Named Connecticut's Fastest Growing Technology Company
HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Marcum LLP, one of the nation's leading accounting and advisory firms, and The Connecticut Technology Council awarded winners in each of the six categories of the Marcum Tech Top 40 in a ceremony at the Chevrolet Theater in Wallingford, CT. The Marcum Tech Top 40 recognizes the 40 fastest growing technology companies in Connecticut based on revenue growth over the past four years.
The winner of this year's Marcum Tech Top 40 is Cheshire, CT-based Alexion Pharmaceuticals Inc. in the Life Sciences category. The company has achieved revenue growth of 24,726 percent over the past four years and a significant market presence with Soliris®, a product approved for the treatment of patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemogolbinuria (PNH)1, a rare, but progressive and life-threatening disease characterized by the excessive destruction of red blood cells.
The other category winners based on revenue growth include:
- RSL Fiber Systems, LLC, based in East Hartford, CT, in the category of Advanced Manufacturing;
- FuelCell Energy, LLC, based in Danbury, CT, in the category of Energy/Environmental Technologies;
- HealthPlanOne, LLC, based in Shelton, CT, in the New Media/Internet/Telecom technology category;
- Higher One Holdings, Inc., based in New Haven, CT, in the Software category;
- Cervalis, LLC, based in Shelton, CT, in the IT Services category.

RSL Fiber Systems, LLC, which won in the Advanced Manufacturing category, is a newcomer to the Marcum Tech Top 40 list. Based in East Hartford, CT, the company manufactures advanced lighting solutions and integrated illumination for applications such as coal mining, refineries, offshore rigs, and first responders.
FuelCell Energy, LLC, based in Danbury, CT, captured the prize in the Energy/Environmental Technologies category. The company has put Connecticut on the fuel cell map with its line of fuel cells for commercial, municipal and utility customers.
HealthPlanOne, LLC, based in Shelton, CT, won in the New Media/Internet/Telecom technology category. The company is a web-based health insurance brokerage focused on marketing individual/family and small business health insurance.
New Haven, CT, is home to the Software category winner, Higher One Holdings, Inc. The company, which went public this June, provides electronic payment and disbursement services for colleges and universities and their students.
In the category of IT Services, Cervalis, LLC, was the winner. Based in Shelton, CT, the company provides IT infrastructure solutions for managed business continuity, hosting, security, storage and co-location.
Companies considered for the Marcum Tech Top 40 were required to have at least $50,000 in revenue in the first year and $3 million in revenue in the fourth year. The list is made up primarily of privately-held companies, but does include 13 public companies.
The winning companies are grouped into six technology verticals: Software, IT Services, Life Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing, New Media/Internet/Telecom and Energy/Environmental Technologies. Geographically the companies are fairly evenly distributed across the state.
This year's sponsors included CNA Insurance, the law firm of Pullman & Comley, Webster Bank, Connecticut Innovations, First Experience Communications, the Pita Group, Robert Half Technology and Wellstone Insurance.
