Marcel Dzama and Jon Crumiller Headline Summer Exhibitions at World Chess Hall of Fame
ST. LOUIS, May 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, May 14, the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF) will unveil two new exhibits: Marcel Dzama: Mischief Makes a Move and Encore! Ivory Chess Treasures from the Jon Crumiller Collection, on view through October 18, 2015.
The work of internationally-acclaimed Marcel Dzama is a nod toward his artistic heroes and the captivating game of chess. The exhibition centers on Dzama's 35-minute silent film titled Une danse des bouffons (A jester's dance), inspired by the failed romantic affair between Marcel Duchamp and Brazilian sculptor Maria Martins.

The exhibit also features Dzama's dioramas, sculpture, prints, and drawings. Art and film lovers will delight in the artist's allusions throughout the show to works by Francisco Goya, Joseph Beuys, Francis Picabia, David Cronenberg and others.
"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to exhibit Dzama's pieces here in Saint Louis," said Shannon Bailey, chief curator at the WCHOF. "Marcel's work explores fascinating themes and art history references. He has created a world that is playful, intriguing, funny, frightening, and surreal... all at once."
The Jon Crumiller Collection features antique ivory masterpieces from around the globe, including antique chess sets, boards, and tables, dating from the 16th to 20th centuries. More than 2,400 individual items are on display, each representing a unique story and stunning level of artistry.
"The title of this show reflects two things: this is our encore presentation of incredible items from one of the world's top collectors, and it is also an encore bow for rare sets that haven't been widely viewed for many years – in some cases, for centuries," said Bailey.
Both shows are free and open to the public.
