Marc P. Berger, Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force in the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's Office, Joins Ropes & Gray's New York Office
NEW YORK, July 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Marc P. Berger, a veteran federal prosecutor who helped lead the Southern District of New York's high-profile crackdown on insider trading and numerous other corporate and financial fraud cases, joined the New York office of Ropes & Gray, one of the world's leading corporate law firms.
Mr. Berger, 40, previously served as the Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. He will be a partner in Ropes & Gray's government enforcement practice.
"Ropes & Gray has an outstanding reputation as a leading international law firm with a high-caliber government enforcement practice group," said Mr. Berger. "I look forward to working with this talented team of attorneys to build on the firm's success and help our clients navigate the complex legal and regulatory challenges they face."
A federal prosecutor since 2002, Mr. Berger was appointed Chief of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force in 2012. In that role, he supervised the investigation and prosecution of multiple high-profile matters, including a widely-discussed effort to curb hedge fund insider trading and the recent charges against four SAC Capital Management companies, financial fraud charges against the former JPMorgan traders who allegedly tried to conceal losses within the bank's Chief Investment Office stemming from the 2012 London Whale incident, financial fraud charges against former Credit Suisse traders who hid more than $100 million in losses in a mortgage-backed securities trading book in 2007 and 2008, and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) charges in connection with a massive kickback scheme to secure the bond trading business of a state-owned Venezuelan bank.
As an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. Berger tried and won convictions in 13 jury trials. He also briefed and argued 21 appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Before he joined the U.S. Attorney's Office, Mr. Berger clerked for the Honorable Richard M. Berman of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Mr. Berger received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and his B.S., with Distinction, from Cornell University.
Mr. Berger's experience will enhance one of the most respected white collar criminal defense practices in the country at Ropes & Gray, whose partners include several other former federal prosecutors and SEC enforcement attorneys. Leading corporations and financial institutions frequently turn to Ropes & Gray for counsel on matters related to securities enforcement, the FCPA, and other complex criminal investigations and prosecutions.
"We are excited to have Marc join our current deep bench of securities and white collar enforcement lawyers in New York, who are representing clients on a wide range of global enforcement matters," said Michael McGovern, a government enforcement partner and co-leader of Ropes & Gray's New York office. "We look forward to adding Marc's tremendous experience to our team."
