BOULDER, Colo., April 7, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ), a division of Penton, today announced that Marc Brush, editorial director, will share insights on the media's role in covering dietary supplements at the 13th Annual Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals, which will take place in Oxford, MS April 15-17, 2014.

NBJ has tracked the advance of supplements into mainstream culture for 15 years. In 2013, dietary supplements continued to enjoy healthy market growth, but unfavorable press events surrounding such leading product categories as multivitamins and fish oil have tempered much of that optimism going into 2014.
"There was a real shift last year," said Brush. "Supplements dipped from an already tenuous position in the press—'maybe these products deliver better health outcomes for some consumers'—to a more damaging one—'maybe these products hurt more than they help'. That's a big deal. The industry needs to talk more openly and with more urgency to better understand the consumer dynamics at play here as they manifest in press cycles."
The conference, which is supported by a cooperative agreement between the NCNPR and the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will discuss approaches for post market surveillance, risk and safety assessment, quality control and adverse event reporting (AER) for botanical dietary supplements (BDS) and natural products, as well as regulatory aspects with perspectives from government, manufacturers and trade associations.
Brush sets the editorial strategy for Nutrition Business Journal, Engredea, and brands in New Hope Natural Media's supply chain portfolio. He brings more than 12 years of professional experience in editing and business analytics to his role, including stints at America Online and the U.S. Congress. He is also a strategic advisor to the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute, a think tank designed to reboot healthcare, and CircleUp, a crowdfunding platform for consumer products entrepreneurs. In addition, Brush is a member of FoodCorps' inaugural corporate council, which connects children to real food to help them grow up healthy. Brush is a frequent contributor to newspapers and leading industry publications and a frequent presenter at industry events.
