Maple Hall Historic Inn to sell at auction
LEXINGTON, Va., March 18, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Maple Hall Historic Inn, one of the Lexington area's most recognizable landmarks, will sell at auction Thursday, April 24, with Woltz & Associates managing the sale.
The 55-acre property, with buildings dating back to the 1820s, is a designated as a Virginia Historic Landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
"This is a magnificent Shenandoah Valley estate that has hosted countless tourists and served as a venue for many weddings, meetings and other events. Many families and alumni from Washington & Lee and Virginia Military Institute have used Maple Hall for their lodging, dining and special events during return visits. The new owners would be in a position to re-establish it as a going business in very short order, because it is being sold fully furnished with gorgeous antiques and a complete commercial kitchen. It also has tennis courts, a pool and miles of walking trails on gorgeous land," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.
The three buildings combined have 22 furnished guestrooms, as well as a restaurant, office, and inn keeper's quarters. The inn is located at 3111 N. Lee Highway, Lexington, just off Interstate 81.
Woltz said the former owners retired in 2012 and have since deceased. The property is being sold by the family.
Maple Hall's majestic Main House was originally built in Greek Revival style for John Beard Gibson, a prominent Rockbridge County resident who owned milling and distilling operations at Timber Ridge and at Jordan's Point, near Lexington. The oldest building – the Guest House – was actually built even earlier, around 1820.
The three-story Pond House was built in in 1986 with careful attention to compatibility with the original buildings.
The auction will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 24, at the estate. Woltz personnel will be available at the property from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 4, 18 and 23.
