SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- GPU-powered analytics leader MapD Technologies today announced that it is partnering with IBM Power Systems to deliver unrivaled analytical performance.
MapD recently conducted a series of 18 benchmark tests which showed an acceleration range of up to 126 percent for SQL queries running on IBM Power Systems S822LC for HPC servers versus x86 based servers (click here for whitepaper). The results showed an average 65% acceleration over the group of 18 benchmark SQL queries, with an acceleration range from 25%-126% across the group.
The benchmarks harness the joint computing power of IBM's POWER CPUs and NVIDIA® Tesla® P100 graphics processors, showing how customers can now query and analyze billion-row datasets in real-time. The POWER processor is a state of the art CPU that comes with NVLink technology and works together seamlessly with the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU. NVLink accelerates CPU-to-GPU analytic pipelines up to 2.5 times compared to systems without NVLink, and that gives businesses far faster insight.
The partnership with IBM extends MapD's pioneering work using GPUs to query and visualize billions of records with millisecond latency. MapD has also joined the OpenPOWER Foundation, an open development community based on the POWER microprocessor architecture. The OpenPOWER Foundation has more than 300 members, including many large companies developing processes and technologies for the OpenPOWER architecture.
MapD also announced that its MapD Core database and MapD Immerse visual analytics client have been optimized to take advantage of IBM Power Systems.
"We're bringing new performance capabilities to a broader audience only available on IBM Power Systems," said Ashish Bambroo, VP of Business Development at MapD Technologies. "IBM Power Systems are optimized for the kind of compute-intensive applications where MapD's technology excels. By harnessing the advantages of IBM Power Systems, we can provide our enterprise customers with more options for tackling the toughest workloads."
IBM Power Systems have a high-bandwidth design to handle the growing influx of data. Users need a much faster feedback loop between the queries and data they are analyzing. Power Systems shorten that feedback loop, allowing customers to make much faster queries, speeding both ad hoc discovery and the training of AI and machine learning models.
MapD's GPU-based platform performs anywhere from 75 to 3,500 times faster than traditional central processing unit (CPU)-bound databases. MapD's products have gained significant early traction across a range of big data use cases, including log analytics, GIS, business intelligence and social media analytics, with customers including Fortune 500 companies in the telecom, retail, finance and ad-tech sectors.
"Companies like MapD are at the forefront of big data and analytics innovation," said Sumit Gupta, Vice President of HPC, AI & Machine Learning for IBM Cognitive Systems. "They've built a querying engine and visual analytics platform from the ground up that takes advantage of GPU accelerators and IBM's POWER architecture, which enables new analytics capabilities for clients. Add multi-server scaling capabilities into the mix, and users can run queries at an unprecedented speed. That's a serious value proposition."
