Manulife Asset Management Adds New Global Equity Team
-- Expands global equity capabilities with seasoned portfolio managers
-- Follows series of acquisitions in International Value, U.S. Core/Value, U.S. Large Cap Growth and Canadian Core Equity Managers over the past two years
BOSTON, March 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Manulife Asset Management has expanded its global equity capabilities by naming Paul Boyne and Doug McGraw to lead a new team managing a global equity strategy for institutional clients and certain wealth management businesses of Manulife Financial and John Hancock. They will report to Christopher Conkey, Chief Equity Investment Officer of Manulife Asset Management.
"Paul and Doug expand and strengthen Manulife Asset Management's investment capabilities and complement our global footprint. Their fundamentally-oriented investment process and diligent risk management practices represent a strong cultural fit with our expanding equity investment franchise," said Mr. Conkey.
Both Mr. Boyne and Mr. McGraw will be Senior Portfolio Managers. Most recently, since 2008, they served as senior fund managers for a global equity team at Invesco Perpetual in the United Kingdom. Their approach to Global Equity employs an unconstrained bottom-up stock selection process based on disciplined fundamental research, with the aim to create a diversified portfolio of quality global stocks that demonstrate compelling value and generate sustainable cash flows.
This approach has led to proven performance results. In Q3 2012, eVestment ranked the global equity strategy headed by Mr. Boyne and Mr. McGraw in the top decile over the last two and three years when evaluated in the Global All Cap Core universe. Additionally, in the Morningstar Europe OE Global Large-Cap Blend Equity Category as of the Q3 2012, the strategy ranked in the top quartile over the one year and top one percent in the two and three year time periods.
Prior to Invesco, Mr. Boyne was Deputy Chief Investment Officer and Head of Global Equities at the Bank of Ireland, conducting portfolio oversight across all regions. Before this, he spent 12 years at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, becoming Managing Director and senior portfolio manager for global value equity; his career also included six years as an accountant with Grant Thornton International. Mr. Boyne holds a postgraduate (MBS) Diploma from Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, University College, Dublin and is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Accountants.
Mr. McGraw was previously an Executive Director and portfolio manager for global value equity at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. He holds a B.S. in Finance from Miami University and an M.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame.
The creation of Manulife Asset Management's new Global Equity team follows a series of recent additions of investment managers. Most recently a Canadian Core Equity team was launched by Monika Skiba, CFA in October 2011. In July 2011, a group of investment management professionals led by W. Shannon Reid, CFA, added U.S. Large Cap Growth capabilities. In February 2011, the former Optique Capital team led by Wendell L. Perkins, CFA, joined to deepen the firm's International Value Equity capabilities. In January 2011, veteran investment managers Walter T. McCormick, CFA, and Emory W. (Sandy) Sanders, Jr., CFA, joined Manulife Asset Management to lead a new U.S. Core Value Equity team.
