Washington Visit to Advocate for a US Manufacturing Renaissance

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On October 3, 2012, Harvard Business School Professor Gary Pisano will discuss his new book Producing Prosperity: Why America Needs a Manufacturing Renaissance at a book reception from 5:30pm to 7:00pm hosted by the Conference on the Renaissance of American Manufacturing, The Committee to Support U.S. Trade Laws (CSUSTL), the Kearny Alliance, and Asia Policy Point at the law offices of King & Spalding, 1700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, 2^nd Floor. He is in Washington to emphasize the importance of American manufacturing to the economy as part of the lead up to National Manufacturing Day on October 5^th.  Dr. Pisano will also meet privately with congressional staff, members of the Administration, and manufacturing policy experts.

In Producing Prosperity: Why America Needs a Manufacturing Renaissance, Harvard Business School co-authors Gary Pisano and Willy Shih chronicle the decline of U.S. manufacturing, showing the effects of years of under-investment in the nation's manufacturing capabilities. 

They reveal the important link between today's undervalued manufacturing operations and innovation. Manufacturing really does matter in an innovation-driven economy. The weakening of the local webs of technological know-how and capabilities or "industrial commons" undermines the U.S. economy.

Through Producing Prosperity, Pisano and Shih press U.S. corporate and government leaders to re-invest in the nation's industrial process not only for the sake of new product development and innovation, but also for the health of American manufacturing and the global economy. 

The professors provide a framework to understand the relationship between manufacturing and innovation. They lay out a roadmap for U.S. government officials to develop a comprehensive manufacturing strategy that emphasizes collaboration between business and academia as well as a balance between basic and applied research.

Gary Pisano, is the Harry E. Figgie Jr. Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, where he has been on the faculty since 1988. He specializes in the management of innovation, technology, competitive strategy, and outsourcing. His co-author, Willy Shih, is a professor of management practice at Harvard Business School. They co-authored the seminal Harvard Business Review articles "Restoring American Competitiveness" (July 2009) and "Does America Really Need Manufacturing?" (March 2012)
