Manufacturing Day Highlights International Automakers Growing Production Across the U.S.
Statement by John Bozzella, President and CEO
WASHINGTON, Oct. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today being Manufacturing Day, I want to highlight the growing impact international automakers have on our country. For over 50 years, international automakers have invested billions of dollars in the U.S. becoming a significant and integral part of our economy. They have increased their manufacturing operations, created tens of thousands of jobs and helped revitalize local economies.
A report we released with the American International Automobile Dealers Association called Redefining the American Auto Industry found that last year international automakers:
- Produced[1] more than 5 million vehicles in the United States, accounting for 45 percent of all vehicles built in America
- Sold 7.5 million vehicles, which was 59 percent of all U.S. sales
- Operated 380 U.S. facilities, including 32 manufacturing plants, representing a $64 billion investment
- Employed 100,000 Americans with a total payroll of more than $9 billion
- Created 500,000 additional American jobs through 10,000 dealership franchises
- Exported 800,000 automobiles from the U.S. to more than 60 different countries around the world
As the numbers demonstrate, every step involved in building an American car creates a positive economic ripple effect. Each company, whether founded in the U.S. or abroad, significantly contributes to our national economy and local communities.
Let's celebrate and raise awareness all month about auto manufacturing in the U.S.A.
