Manufacturers Directory Reports Texas Industrial Jobs Increased 1% Over Past Year
EVANSTON, Ill., June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in Texas rose 1% over the past twelve months according to the 2012 Texas Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Texas gained 9,043 industrial jobs or about one percent between April 2011 and April 2012.
Manufacturers' News reports Texas is now home to 22,672 manufacturers employing 1,165,138 workers.
"Manufacturing in Texas continues to thrive," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "The state's friendly business environment, educated workforce, and solid infrastructure have been a draw for a variety of enterprises."
Bright spots for the state include Japan-based Kuraray America's plans to build a PVA resin plant in La Porte; the opening of two CK Technologies plants in Fort Worth and Brownsville; and the construction of a new BAE manufacturing facility in Austin. Brazilian denim manufacturer Santana Textiles opened a new facility in Edinburg; FlexSteel established a new location in Baytown; and Texas Star & Nut expanded its Boerne plant.
MNI reports industrial machinery and equipment remains Texas' largest manufacturing sector by employment with 167,843 of the state's jobs, up 2.7% over the year. Fabricated metal ranks second with 115,354 industrial jobs, down 1.9%. Oil and gas extraction has overtaken food products as the state's third-largest industrial sector by employment with 109,527 jobs, up 7.7% over the past twelve months.
MNI reports other sectors that gained jobs over the past year included paper products, up 7.4%; petroleum and coal products, up 3.2%; instruments/related products, up 2.5%; rubber/plastics, up 1.2%; and primary metals, up 1%. Losses were seen in textiles/apparel, down 6.7%; stone/clay/glass, down 4.6%; printing/publishing, down 4.3%; furniture/fixtures, down 1.9%; food products, down 1.6%; and lumber/wood, down 1.4%.
Industrial locations closing in Texas included a Pilgrim's Pride production plant in Dallas; Newell Rubbermaid's facility in Greenville; and Texas Instruments' chip factory in Stafford.
MNI reports Southeast Texas accounts for the most industrial employment in the state with 477,800 jobs, up 2% over the past twelve months. Northeast Texas accounts for the second most with 406,272 manufacturing jobs, down 1.5%, while third-ranked East Central Texas is home to 95,871, up 1.2%. Southwest Texas accounts for 89,843 manufacturing jobs, up 1.4%, and Northwest Texas accounts for 47,698, up a half percent. The West Central region of the state is home to 47,654 industrial jobs, 6.5% more than last year.
Houston remains the state's and the nation's top city by industrial employment with 235,694 manufacturing jobs, up 2.4% over the year. Dallas saw employment decrease 4.1% and is currently home to 73,083 industrial workers. Fort Worth accounts for 63,326 industrial jobs, up a half percent, while San Antonio accounts for 51,581, up 1% over the year. Fifth-ranked Austin saw jobs increase 5.6% and currently accounts for 44,331 industrial jobs.
