Manheim Affirms its Commitment to Conservation in Earth Month
Company builds on its environmental stewardship with three key sustainability goals for 2017.
ATLANTA, April 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of Earth Month, Manheim and its team members announce three key sustainability goals for 2017: offsetting carbon emissions by 3,000 tons at its facilities, saving 2.5 million gallons of water and achieving zero waste to landfill at one site. Conservation is a big part of Manheim's culture, fueled by the ongoing commitment to sustainability that runs throughout all divisions of its family-owned parent company, Cox Enterprises. The 2017 efforts are a part of the company-wide sustainability program, Cox Conserves, which is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.
"Environmental stewardship has long been a part of our values and beliefs at Cox and Manheim, driving how we operate our businesses," said Janet Barnard, president of Inventory Solutions at Cox Automotive. "I'm proud of our teams who are helping us drive these important goals and doing what is right for our customers, communities and each other."
Cox Conserves is the national sustainability program of Cox Enterprises, the parent company of Cox Automotive and Manheim. Through Cox Conserves, the company is committed to sending zero waste to landfill by 2024 and becoming carbon and water neutral by 2044. The program engages each of the company's major subsidiaries (Cox Communications, Cox Automotive and Cox Media Group) and encourages Cox Enterprises' 60,000 employees and their families to engage in eco-friendly practices.
"Being sustainable is as good for the business as it is for the environment, and we are fortunate to have leaders who recognize and support these important efforts," added Stephanie Valdez Streaty, senior director of corporate responsibility at Manheim. "Beyond identifying projects that will help us reduce our impact on the environment while saving costs, we are also focused on engaging our team members and supporting them in their own conservation efforts at home".
With its 127 traditional and mobile locations in North America, Manheim plays a significant role in helping the company achieve its sustainability goals. Since the Cox Conserves program launched in 2007, projects at Manheim locations have offset 22,934 tons of carbon, diverted 23,579 tons of waste from the landfill and saved 57 million gallons of water.
In 2016 alone, Manheim achieved the following:
- Saved 4.2 million gallons of water through implementation of a rain harvesting system and multiple high efficiency aerator projects. This is equivalent to four-and-a-half Olympic-sized pools.
- Offset 1,855 tons of carbon through a solar installation, LED light and HVAC projects. This is equivalent to over 4,033,158 miles driven by an average passenger vehicle.
- Diverted 7,860 tons of waste from the landfill from recycling and composting programs.
