Manchester Bombing: What a "Severe" Terrorism Threat Level Means for Travel Insurance
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- After a terrorist bombing at the Manchester Arena on May 22, the United Kingdom's threat level for terrorism remains "severe". Ahead of the summer travel season, travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, explains the impact of the "severe" designation for travelers visiting Europe.
Future Attacks Can Be Covered
Although an ensuing attack is "highly likely", the "severe" threat level does not impact the availability of travel insurance for those with upcoming trips planned to the U.K.
Most insurance providers view another attack as a separate event from the Manchester bombing, meaning future incidents in Europe can be covered, as long as the traveler buys their policy before an attack occurs.
"Unfortunately, it is too late to buy a new policy with coverage for the Manchester attack," says Squaremouth spokesperson Megan Singh. "However, travelers who purchased a policy with terrorism coverage before May 22nd may be able to cancel."
What the Terrorism Benefit Covers
Most travel insurance policies with the Terrorism benefit cover a traveler to cancel an upcoming trip if an attack is declared an act of terrorism, and occurs in or near their destination within 30 days of their arrival.
Concern Over Terrorism Reaches an All-Time High
Interest in terrorism coverage is the highest it's ever been, according to Squaremouth sales data. Travelers going to Europe are the most concerned, especially those traveling to the five most popular European countries.
Annual Increase in Sales with Terrorism Coverage for Top 5 European Destinations
- Italy (+110%)
- United Kingdom (+85%)
- France (+130%)
- Spain (+63%)
- Germany (+94%)
