Managing Your Menopause, Know the Options
Survey shows that despite symptoms impacting women's lives, few consult their doctor
KIRKLAND, QC, Oct. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - Menopause, a natural part of aging, is an important milestone in a woman's life; however according to a recent survey, Canadian woman tend to suffer needlessly with the symptoms of menopause and not seek help, while they strive to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
The survey, conducted by Leger Marketing, shows that Canadian women going through menopause have experienced symptoms such as hot flashes (82%), difficulty with sleep (58%), and fatigue or lack of energy (50%).1 Further, 43 per cent say these symptoms have moderately or highly impacted their lives.1
Despite this impact, 64 per cent have not sought medical management options and only 37 per cent say they have spoken to their doctor.1
"Every woman will experience menopause differently, but for many women, the symptoms they experience will have a huge impact on how they function in everyday life," says Dr. Vivien Brown, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto. "For years women have been receiving conflicting information about managing their symptoms, so it is not surprising that women tend to suffer needlessly."
In fact, 53 per cent of Canadian women indicated that they have received conflicting information about menopause and treatment.1 Still, only half have even looked for information, with many saying they are not sure of what type of information they should be looking for.1
"Today's menopausal women lead full and active lives and they have choices about how they manage their symptoms," said Dr. Brown. "Of course women should speak to family and friends, but I encourage women to bear in mind that the menopause experience is different for everyone and should definitely include a doctor at some point."
The menopause experience encompasses a number of physical and emotional changes that can last six years or more.2 Most women will start experiencing the symptoms that come with menopause between the ages of 40 and 58, with the average age around 51.2 The most common menopausal symptoms can include irregular periods, night sweats, hot flashes, fatigue, sleep disturbance, mood swings, and a change in sexual desire.3
Although focus on diet and exercise can help manage symptoms associated with menopause, many women need additional support, such as hormone therapy, to help address these symptoms.4 Hormone therapy and other treatment options are ways to manage menopausal symptoms.
