Malecare Targets African-American Prostate Cancer Sufferers With 'Twice As Many' Program
The Initiative, from Global Male-Health-Focused Nonprofit, Recognizes that Prostate Cancer Kills Black Men at Twice the Rate as White Men
NEW YORK, April 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Malecare—internationally known for programs helping under-served and marginalized men, their husbands, wives, partners, family members and friends—is launching Twice As Many, a new program focused on understanding why prostate cancer kills African-American men at more than twice the rate of white men. Twice as Many will develop advocacy, awareness and psycho-social support programs addressing the underserved needs of African-American men diagnosed with prostate cancer. As part of the new initiative, Malecare will develop dialogues and create support avenues with the alumni associations of historically black colleges, African-American LGBT organizations and predominantly African-American religious congregations.
"After conducting a yearlong review of the current advocacy, education and research promotion activities around this issue, we have concluded that there can be major improvements in advocacy and awareness," said Darryl Mitteldorf, founder and executive director, Malecare. "Our goal is to create a resource center and to develop a deeper understanding of the African-American patient experience, particularly focused on those facing the advanced-stage disease. We're also going to deepen our understanding of what 'race' means, relative to disease."
With financial support from Astellas Pharma US, Inc., the Twice as Many program will include a new website, social media campaign, teleconference series and an e-book containing narratives by men of African descent who are diagnosed with prostate cancer. Twice as Many will soon be the source of authority on why African American men die at twice the rate as white men from prostate cancer.
