Malaysia Scouts Association and Prem Rawat Sign Peace Pledge
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Tuesday, September 30 the Scouts Association of Malaysia signed a Peace Pledge with Peace Ambassador Prem Rawat, founder of The Prem Rawat Foundation, as part of the International Scouts initiative called "Messengers of Peace."
With over 40 million members globally, the Scouts movement is booming, especially in Asia. In recent years, young Asians have enthusiastically embraced scouting from Malaysia, to Japan, to India—a fact not lost on the International Scouts governing body, which moved its headquarters from Europe to Kuala Lumpur in June 2014.
With a million young people and older volunteers involved in scouting in Malaysia and an estimated four million in Indonesia, the epicenter of this century-old organization, created in England in 1907, has now shifted eastward.
Today, over 36 million scouts around the world contribute hundreds of millions of hours of volunteer work helping those in need in their communities. Since adopting the "Messengers of Peace" initiative in 2011, scouts also attempt to contribute to global peace by encouraging peaceful actions to create a better world.
At an event held at the leading Sultan Alam Shah school in the government district of Putrajaya, the Chief Scout of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dr. Hj. Shafie Mohd Salleh, welcomed Prem Rawat as a fellow scout, presenting him the Scouts Award of Friendship and a "Messenger of Peace" scarf, a symbol representing brotherhood among all scouts.
Attended by an estimated 500 scouts and scout leaders, the Peace Pledge was a commitment between the two parties to collaborate in inspiring and helping young people in Malaysia and across the scouting world to do more to bring about a peaceful world.
Speaking to the scouts, Prem Rawat focused on the importance of making the right choices in life, stating that our choices are what define us. He went on to say that good choices can be a powerful weapon against ignorance, that they can bring people together and act as the glue for society. He pointed out that, historically, civilizations that chose badly crumbled, while those that chose wisely have withstood the test of time.
Chief Scout Tan Sri Dr. Shafie, describing Prem Rawat as an honored friend of Malaysia, expressed his thanks to him for sharing his knowledge and wisdom. He went on to say, "We [the Scouting movement] re-dedicate ourselves to the pursuit of peace and send a message of peace across the world."
