MakeSpace Promotes Co-Founder & COO to CEO and Expands Management Team to Continue Rapid Growth
Rahul Gandhi to Lead Business as Demand for Company's Consumer Storage Services Surges 150%
NEW YORK, Nov. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- MakeSpace, the leading on-demand, full-service storage provider today announced the promotion of Rahul Gandhi, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, to Chief Executive Officer. Sam Rosen has decided to step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer. As part of the management changes, MakeSpace has hired a new Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Logistics & Operations. This announcement comes at a monumental time for the business: the number of items stored with MakeSpace recently surpassed one million and annual revenue growth has topped 150%.
As CEO, Mr. Gandhi will be responsible for continuing the company's remarkable growth trajectory. Having co-founded MakeSpace nearly five years ago with Mr. Rosen, Mr. Gandhi has built a scalable, technology-enabled operating model that provides full-service storage services at less than self-storage prices. Mr. Gandhi will be responsible for deploying operational efficiencies across markets, further penetrating core consumer segments, and accelerating product innovations.
In 2013, MakeSpace first offered its storage services in New York City, the biggest market in the United States' $34 billion storage industry, and quickly expanded into Chicago, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles. The company now brings in tens of millions of dollars in annual revenue and projects profitability in multiple markets in 2018.
"Sam and I co-founded MakeSpace to bring radical, consumer-focused innovation to the storage industry," said Mr. Gandhi, co-founder and CEO of MakeSpace. "The reaction to our service has been incredible with tens of thousands of customers using MakeSpace for their storage needs. We're proud of what our team of hundreds of employees across our four markets has built, and I'm excited about what lies ahead. I thank Sam from the bottom of my heart for his collaboration and the Board for their support."
"MakeSpace has grown tremendously since its post-hurricane Sandy inception," said Mr. Rosen, co-founder of MakeSpace. "As the company rapidly scales, delivering an industry-redefining customer experience is critical, and Rahul's exceptional skills as an operator make him the right person to lead MakeSpace into the future. While no longer involved with the day-to-day at MakeSpace, I cannot wait to watch Rahul and the team continue to transform the storage industry."
Mark Suster, managing partner at Upfront Ventures and MakeSpace Board Member, said, "I've worked closely with Sam and Rahul for nearly 5 years, and I'm super proud of what they've both achieved. I can't wait to see what each of them does in the years ahead."
In his new role, Mr. Gandhi has expanded the company's management team to fuel and support future growth. Today, MakeSpace announces the hiring of Richard Mumby as Chief Marketing Officer, who previously led marketing at PAX Labs, Bonobos and the Gilt Groupe. MakeSpace also has hired Jesus Flores del Bosque to lead Logistics and Operations. Mr. Flores del Bosque previously managed logistics for both L'Oréal and Amazon's fulfillment centers.
"As we redefine an industry," Mr. Gandhi said, "we need to continue strengthening our brand leadership, and Richard brings more than a decade of high-growth marketing leadership experience to our business, having created, commercialized and scaled several breakthrough consumer brands."
Mr. Gandhi continues, "With over 10 years of logistics and supply chain experience, Jesus accelerates our path in building an insurmountable competitive advantage in logistics and operations. His experience using technology to solve complicated warehouse and supply chain problems translates perfectly into how we think about scaling our own operations."
