Make Yourself a Hero: Salt Lake Comic Con Creates Do-It-Yourself Cosplay Workshops with The Leonardo
- Salt Lake Comic Con and The Leonardo are co-sponsoring Do-It-Yourself Cosplay Workshops; Workshops begin June 11, 2014 -
SALT LAKE CITY, June 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Wondering how to create those elaborate handmade costumes you saw at the last Salt Lake Comic Con? For everybody that ran around the house as a kid pretending to be a superhero, Salt Lake Comic Con will demystify the art of costume making for Comic Con Cosplay.
Today, Salt Lake Comic Con (http://saltlakecomiccon.com/) and The Leonardo announced they are partnering to co-sponsor a series of monthly Cosplay Do-It-Yourself Workshops to teach fans how to build their own costumes.
The first workshop is June 11, 2014 from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm MDT at The Leonardo in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. The initial class is called Upcycling in Costume Construction and will focus on repurposing common materials for costumes, props and accouterments. Future workshops will focus on prosthetics and makeup, electronics, sound, light and movement, sewing essentials, and plastics and digital projects.
"Our fans are so passionate about dressing the parts of their favorite characters," said Dan Farr, Salt Lake Comic Con Founder and Show Producer. "More and more we're hearing how those that aren't engaged in Cosplay want to learn and get involved. These workshops will teach fans how to make their own costumes so that when our September Comic Con rolls around they'll be ready to show up in costume and partake in the incredible Cosplay events we have planned."
The monthly workshops will feature Leonardo artists, guest presenters, information and materials for fans to try a variety of techniques for building their own costumes. Upcycling in Costume Construction will allow attendees to explore and try various processes with cardboard, paper, recycled fabrics, stuff from kitchen junk drawers, hardware store goodies, found objects and more.
"This is just one more example of the way we listen to our fans to make Salt Lake Comic Con their event," said Bryan Brandenburg, Salt Lake Comic Con Co-founder and Vice President of Marketing. "Even if you don't want to be a full on Cosplayer, these workshops will enable even beginners to get the basics down to fashion a costume for their favorite character. It's not just about saving money, it's about beginning an engaging lifetime hobby."
The workshop costs $30.00 and is open to fans of any age and any genre. You can also apply for a scholarship and learn about the Cosplay Class on the webpage here. The workshop begins at 6:00 pm with a meet and greet in the Main Atrium at The Leonardo. The schedule is as follows:
- 6:15 pm event room or auditorium-introduce presenters + brief introduction to projects – Will be in auditorium – The Leonardo will provide snacks/appetizers during the first 15 minute mingling
- 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm breakout sessions to different areas - event room and workshops- try it yourself - Will be in event center, classrooms, lab spaces, etc.
- 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm scheduled slideshows by demonstrators – Will be in auditorium
"This is a perfect 'fit' for The Leonardo," said Bryton Sampson, Communications Specialist at The Leonardo. "The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) concepts that we emphasize will come in handy no matter what kind of costume you're making."
