Major Foundations Embrace ARISE Detroit! Neighborhood Summit
Will Share Grant Opportunities With Hundreds Of City Residents
DETROIT, Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Representatives of four major foundations will participate in a workshop on obtaining grants for community programs as part of the 5th annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Rising Summit, Saturday, Nov. 1.
The summit will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the downtown campus of Wayne County Community College District, 1001 W. Fort Street. The summit's purpose is to equip residents with strategies and tools to address many of the issues they face throughout the year, including crime, fighting blight, establishing neighborhood block clubs and repurposing vacant land.
Participating foundations are The Kresge Foundation, the Knight Foundation, the Skillman Foundation and the Kellogg Foundation. Collectively, the foundations have poured millions of dollars into improving city neighborhoods and schools.

The Kresge and Knight foundations have recently announced new grant programs aimed at helping Detroit neighborhoods.
The Knight Foundation unveiled the Knight Cities Challenge, soliciting ideas on how to improve cities. Knight has set aside $5 million for that purpose.. The Kresge Foundation announced a new $5 million grant programed aimed at funding innovative small projects in city neighborhoods.
The foundation funding workshop is one of 12 that will be held during the summit, which is co-sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and Detroit Future City.
Other workshops will include fighting blight and crime, forming block clubs, developing youth leadership programs, urban farming faith-based neighborhood development and more. Workshops will be held from 10:45 a.m. to noon., and from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Last year, more than 400 residents attended the summit..
Keynote speakers for the event are Ken Cockrel, executive director of Detroit Future City, and Lisa Howze, director of External Affairs for the City of Detroit who will represent Mayor Mike Duggan.
Cockrel will detail neighborhood revitalization efforts at the morning plenary session at 9:30 am. Howze will discuss city efforts to improve neighborhoods, highlighted by the city's home auction program, during a lunchtime presentation.
