General Motors Company Research Report
On December 16, 2013, Reuters reported that General Motors Company (GM) has revealed its intention to invest nearly $1.3 billion at five US plants to make a new transmission and boost output for a planned new engine as well as add a vehicle paint shop. According to the report, the said investment at the plants in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana will create or retain about 1,000 jobs combined, but did not say how many will be new jobs. The report further stated that the five plants employ about 7,500 people. Reuters reported that the Company disclosed the said investment as a part of $8 billion that GM typically spends annually on its global operations, which will be used to make a new 10-speed transmission and boost planned output of a new V6 engine, as well as support production of an existing 6-speed transmission. In line with the said investment and upgrades, Reuters informed that GM will add a new paint shop and logistics center. Mark Reuss, GM North American President, said, "Today's announced plant upgrades continue the momentum of a resurgent auto industry. More importantly, these investments add up to higher quality and more fuel-efficient vehicles." Bloomberg further reported that an order halting the suits after Toyota and the lawyers asked for time to try settling the cases was issued by US District Judge James V. Selna in Santa Ana, California. In his order, Selna said, "Participation in the intensive settlement process is open to all plaintiffs. Cases that do not resolve during the initial settlement conference shall be set for a formal mediation." According to Bloomberg, the move toward settlement comes less than two months after Toyota lost its first trial in a lawsuit claiming an electronic defect can cause its vehicles to speed up uncontrollably, and Toyota settled after an Oklahoma City jury ordered the Company to pay $3 million. Bloomberg further informed that Selna set a hearing for January 14, 2014 for any comment on the said settlement process and stated that settlement conferences would begin in February 2014.
