Maine School of Science and Mathematics to Celebrate School Choice
LIMESTONE, Maine, Jan. 16, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Students and families from all corners of Maine are invited to join Maine School of Science and Mathematics in celebrating school choice at an open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21.
The open house will feature an address by David Pearson, executive director of Maine School of Science and Mathematics. The event will be attended by the school's 145 current students, who come from all 16 counties in Maine, as well as visiting students and families.
This event is planned to coincide with the history-making celebration of National School Choice Week 2019, which will feature more than 40,000 school choice events across all 50 states.
"We will be celebrating school choice by highlighting what Maine School of Science and Mathematics offers students and families," said Alan Whittemore, dean of enrollment management at the school. "Graduates are able to be dually enrolled in the local UMaine branch campus, earning as much as an associate degree upon graduating. Tuition is paid by Maine's taxpayers, a true removal of any socio-economic barriers."
Maine School of Science and Mathematics was founded in 1995 as a residential magnet school that offers a rigorous college prep curriculum. The STEM school serves scholars in grades 9-12.
As a nonpartisan, nonpolitical public awareness effort, National School Choice Week shines a positive spotlight on effective education options for students, families, and communities around the country. From January 20 through 26, 2019, more than 40,000 independently-planned events will be held in celebration of the Week. For more information, visit www.schoolchoiceweek.com.
