Maggie Flanigan Studio Now Taking Applications for 2017 Six-Week Meisner Summer Intensive
NEW YORK, March 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Applications are now being accepted for this year's Meisner Summer Intensive at the Maggie Flanigan Studio (http://www.maggieflaniganstudio.com/studio/), one of the most respected actor training programs in the nation. The six-week summer intensive runs from June 9 to July 21 and is ideal for aspiring actors looking to develop professional craft, technique and vocabulary. Executive Director and Head of Acting Charlie Sandlan personally interviews each applicant as part of the highly selective admissions process.
As Sandlan explains, "We purposely keep enrollment small. The Maggie Flanigan Studio is not a factory taking hundreds of students and throwing them into overcrowded classes with second-rate teachers. There are plenty of those to choose from. I interview everyone personally because I'm teaching you. I care deeply about the integrity of the studio and the quality of students we bring in."
Professional actor Sanford Meisner began his teaching career in 1935, and the technique that bears his name has become one of the most revered approaches to the craft. The technique consists of an increasingly complex set of exercises that build on each other. Key competencies include improvisation, access of the emotional self, spontaneity and personalization of material. The Meisner Technique is more concerned with instinctive responses to one's environment and fellow actors than conscious execution of a skill set; this has earned the technique comparisons to Method Acting, though there are important differences.
"If you are committed to a life in the arts, then the first step is taking yourself seriously," says Maggie Flanigan, Artistic Director and Master Teacher. "Our six-week summer acting program is designed to introduce aspiring actors to the demands of the art form, real insight into what top professional actor training is, and an intensive introduction to the training of Sanford Meisner."
In the 16 years since its founding, the Maggie Flanigan Studio has seen countless actors graduate from its programs and go on to great things on stage and screen. Many of those actors have enthusiastically endorsed the studio's faculty and methods. "The Maggie Flanigan Studio has created a program that allows you to explore all of the necessary factors that make up an artist," says Logan Ricket in his 5-star review. "The program takes you far beyond scene work. You work on your voice, your body, and your knowledge of the history of the art."
Jamie Butler, a current first-year student who attended the Meisner Summer Intensive last year, has this to say about her experienced: "This studio changed my life. The Meisner intensive introduced me to the hard work of acting, and Charlie's incredible teaching gave me the confidence I needed to pursue my dream. He helped instill in me the desire to be a real artist. Going into the full conservatory was a no-brainer."
As one of the most acclaimed professional actor training programs in the nation, the Maggie Flanigan Studio has developed a reputation for its high standards and serious yet respectful treatment of students. The studio is fully committed to the development of the "entire artist." Other components of the summer acting program include classes in anatomy, movement, nutrition, playwriting, voice and film history. Maggie Flanigan has invested decades in teaching actors, and many of her students have gone on to lengthy, successful careers. Current Head of Acting Charlie Sandlan is proudly continuing Flanigan's work.
