MADD Colorado Holds Ninth Annual Denver Walk Like MADD® Run/Walk
--2 out of 3 people will be involved in a drunk driving crash in their lifetime.--
DENVER, Aug. 1, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- This Saturday, August 2, more than 1,000 walkers are expected to support Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Colorado at the 9th annual Denver Walk Like MADD® event. The 5K walk route will circle Sloan's Lake Park and raise awareness and funds to help eliminate drunk driving and support victims and survivors in Colorado.
This year, two special guests will be attending the Denver Walk Like MADD: MADD National President Jan Withers will be speaking during the opening ceremonies, and KOSI 101's Jonathan Wilde will be master of ceremonies for the event. The opening ceremonies begin at 8:30 a.m., and the walk steps off at 9:00 a.m. In addition to the walk itself, other festivities will include a Health & Safety Fair, Kids' Zone, Doggie Den and Tribute area.
"I encourage everyone to come out and do your part to protect our families from drunk driving. This event is the opportunity to work together to ensure it never happens again. We will not be satisfied with progress. The need is not over. Please join us and walk to save lives." says Withers.
The cost to participate in the Denver Walk Like MADD is $25 for adults and $20 for youth ages 5 to 21. To sign-up, form a team or make a donation, visit www.walklikemadd.org/denver. Participants may bring friendly, leashed dogs to walk with them as well.
Funds raised through Walk Like MADD further MADD's lifesaving mission and its Campaign to Eliminate Drunk Driving®, which calls for high-visibility law enforcement, ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers and support for the development of advanced in-vehicle technology to automatically determine if a driver is drunk.
The 2014 Denver Walk Like MADD is presented by Bachus & Schanker, LLC, MADD Colorado's Statewide Sponsor, and American Family Insurance.
"We are excited to support Walk Like MADD as the Statewide Sponsor of MADD Colorado," says Darin L. Schanker, founding partner of Bachus & Schanker, LLC. "We see the devastating effects of drunk driving on victims and their families. Through our contributions and continued participation as MADD Colorado's Statewide Sponsor, we support the invaluable programs and victim services provided by MADD."
"American Family Insurance is honored to be a local presenting sponsor of Walk Like MADD," said George Saponas, Colorado Sales Director. "We're coming together as neighbors, co-workers, families and friends to join MADD to make our roads safer."
The Denver Walk Like MADD is also sponsored by King Soopers, The Frickey Law Firm, NuBilt Restoration & Construction, Halliburton, Fairmount Cemetery, KOSI 101 and the Lapham Law Firm.
Since its founding in 1980, MADD has helped save more than 300,000 lives — but thousands of people across the country continue to be killed and injured by this violent crime. In 2012, 10,322 people died in drunk driving crashes — one every 51 minutes — and about 345,000 were injured in drunk driving crashes.
There are more than 25,000 DUI arrests annually in Colorado; close to one-third are repeat offenders.
