Maclay Murray and Spens Selects MobileIron for BYOD and for Android and iPad Management
Leading Scottish Legal Firm Selects MDM Vendor to Support Multi-OS Mobile Estate
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Legal firm, Maclay Murray and Spens LLP (MMS) has implemented MobileIron to enable the introduction of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme and iPads for secure data management whilst on the move.
MMS is one of Scotland's oldest commercial law firms with offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and London. After years of providing employees with corporate owned BlackBerry devices, the IT team came under increasing pressure from employees who wanted to use Android and Apple devices for work. Crawford Hawley-Groat, Director of IT at MMS, was tasked with creating an enterprise mobility strategy that would enable flexibility in device choice, without impacting security.
He explains: "It became clear our corporate-owned, BlackBerry-only mobile policy was no longer fulfilling the mobile demands of our employees. As the consumer smartphone market matured, the demand to use other devices like iPads, and to have the option to use personal iPhone or Android devices for work, has grown significantly."
The iPad is increasingly being used in legal environments as a substitute for physical files which provides clear productivity benefits to MMS, as Mr. Hawley-Groat explains, "Many lawyers are out of the office visiting clients and courtrooms which requires management of a lot of data on the move. Tablet-based computing provides the versatility needed to do this. It became clear that devising a secure approach to providing a different range of corporate devices alongside a BYOD policy would enable us to support iPad use, as well as provide the smartphone choice to our users in a secure and controlled fashion."
MMS evaluated a number of solutions from other vendors but chose MobileIron because of its ability to protect the user experience and, at the same time, provide superior visibility and control capabilities across the full spectrum of operating systems.
"Ensuring that the user experience is the right one is especially significant when employees are using their own devices," said Mr. Hawley-Groat. "We quickly settled on MobileIron, as the technology allows employees to use the devices the way they were meant to be used. Although we looked at other possible solutions, we found that they didn't provide the native user experience we were looking for. MobileIron was the most comprehensive solution for all operating systems."
Working closely with trusted partner, Bridgeway Security Solutions, MMS has implemented MobileIron across its existing corporate-owned mobile estate and successfully launched a BYOD programme across the firm. John Howell, of Bridgeway Security Solutions, explains:
"MMS wanted to provide their users with access to corporate information from personal or corporately owned devices but needed the security and management capabilities to do so. At the same time, they wanted to ensure that this wasn't to impact on the user's native experience of the device.
"Following a short trial, MMS implemented MobileIron across the entire organisation. The IT department can now say 'yes' to any device its employees wish to use. Kitted with the management capabilities they need, they now have the visibility and control they require to manage these devices without impacting on the user. They now have confidence that if an employee's device is lost or stolen that corporate information can be wiped remotely at the touch of a button," continues Howell.
To further simplify management of smart devices, Mr. Hawley-Groat and his team have deployed MobileIron Sentry for iPad. This provides everything they need to view and manage inventory, device activity and apps on one multi-touch interface. He concludes:
"Since implementing MobileIron, and the subsequent launch of our BYOD scheme, we have seen an influx of different operating systems coming onto the network – primarily iOS and Android – and we can handle them all with ease. The central management system gives us incredible visibility and the device lock-down capabilities gives the IT team, and the partnership, peace of mind that if a device is lost or missing we can remove all corporate data at the touch of a button. Even better, with the MobileIron Sentry console I can do all this from my own iPad."
