Mac-Gray Campus Solutions Promotes 'Celebrate Earth' Campaign in Recognition of 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
WALTHAM, Mass., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In observance of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Mac-Gray Campus Solutions today announced its second annual "Celebrate Earth" environmental awareness campaign in conjunction with the Carbonfund.org Million Tree Challenge.
Mac-Gray Campus Solutions, a division of Mac-Gray Corporation, provides laundry facilities management services to more than 600 colleges and universities and has a long standing commitment to conservation and energy efficiency. The "Celebrate Earth" campaign is one component of Mac-Gray's Clean & Green Vision, which includes internal and external initiatives designed to promote conservation, generate awareness and educate the public about the environmental impact of laundry.
"While our commitment to environmental stewardship remains steady throughout the year, we try to raise awareness and engage in a dialogue with students in celebration of Earth Day each year," commented Stewart MacDonald, CEO of Mac-Gray.
Mac-Gray chose to partner with Carbonfund.org in the Million Tree Challenge because tree planting is critically important in the fight against climate change. Tree planting can sequester CO2 from the atmosphere, prevent erosion and protect biodiversity. Additionally, trees produce oxygen, purify the air, provide shelter and nutrition for wildlife and beautify landscapes.
Since early April, thousands of college students from across the country have been reached by Mac-Gray’s efforts to promote the Million Tree Challenge, with many choosing to participate. In exchange for their participation, Mac-Gray made a donation to Carbonfund.org’s campaign to plant a tree on behalf of each student and provided a “Celebrate Earth” T-shirt produced from recycled materials.
“The response from students has been tremendous. This generation is passionate about environmental issues and we are proud to encourage their devotion to sustainability and to support the Million Tree Challenge,” said Kourtney Barnes, Director of Sustainability Initiatives at Mac-Gray.
Mac-Gray also remains dedicated to water and energy conservation and continues to increase the ratio of high-efficiency washers versus traditional top-load washers installed in laundry rooms throughout the country.
"We strive to exceed our annual water savings goal of 600 million gallons throughout 2010," added MacDonald.
