LyondellBasell Volunteers Make Worldwide Impact on Global Care Day
HOUSTON, April 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A network of more than 3,000 volunteers linking around the globe from Asia to Europe to the Americas will work tirelessly for their communities on Saturday, April 9. For nearly 24 hours, somewhere a LyondellBasell volunteer will be working to make a community a better place as part of LyondellBasell's 12th annual Global Care Day.
The worldwide day of community service will see people helping people in 64 communities in 24 countries with a combined 12,000 hours of volunteer service. The numbers add up to a better world, one community at a time.
"Global Care Day is one of the many ways that LyondellBasell employees work together with our local communities around the world to make each location a better place to live and work," said LyondellBasell CEO Jim Gallogly. "As an added benefit, our employees gain a greater understanding of their communities and our neighbors get to know our people better. Everyone benefits from the experience."
LyondellBasell established Global Care Day in 2000 as a way to reach out to local communities where the company operates. It challenges employees worldwide to participate in community service above and beyond ongoing community involvement activities with a special project on the same day. Each participating site selects a project that meets the following criteria: It addresses a community need, it is aligned with one of the company's community-relations focus-areas of education, environmental conservancy or community prosperity and the result will be a visible improvement because of employee involvement.
LyondellBasell Global Care Day projects in 2011 stretch from Guangzhou, China, to Plock, Poland, to Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Houston, Texas. The 70 worldwide projects benefitting our communities will have an estimated $225,000 economic impact. Projects include painting at a historic 1900s lighthouse in Fairport Harbor, Ohio; garden wall painting at a school in Istanbul, Turkey; wildlife habitat and park clean-up at Texas' historic San Jacinto Battleground near Houston; and park improvement projects in Ferrara, Italy; Rotterdam, Netherlands; and Pasadena, Texas. In Wesseling, Germany, employees will collect debris alongside the Rhine River. In La Porte, Texas, employees will plant seedlings to establish a new tree farm. Other LyondellBasell volunteers will participate in community partnerships to restore and refurbish community centers, animal shelters, homeless centers and outdoor learning centers at local schools.
