Lung Cancer Alliance Commends American Lung Association for Launch of LUNG FORCE and for Raising Awareness of Lung Cancer Among Women
Lung Cancer Became the Leading Cause of Cancer Death Among Women in the 1980's
WASHINGTON, May 13, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lung Cancer Alliance praised American Lung Association on its launch of LUNG FORCE, an initiative aimed at raising awareness among women about lung cancer.
"We welcome the American Lung Association's help in bringing attention to the fact that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among women - an appropriate and important message during women's health week," stated Lung Cancer Alliance President and CEO Laurie Fenton Ambrose.
In 2010, Lung Cancer Alliance issued a groundbreaking report, entitled "Out of the Shadows: Women and Lung Cancer," done in partnership with Brigham and Women's Hospital's Connors Center for Women's Health and Gender Biology.
"This was an eye opener for women who were not aware that since the late 1980's lung cancer has been the leading cause of cancer death, that two out of three new cases are being diagnosed in former smokers and never smokers - and that more women who never smoked are being diagnosed with lung cancer than men who never smoked," she said.
The report has led to greater attention to the impact of lung cancer on women and the importance of gender based research. The report can be accessed at this site: http://www.lungcanceralliance.org/assets/docs/special-features/Out%20of%20the%20Shadows%20Report%20FINAL.pdf
"We are pleased that ALA is adding its support to these efforts and look forward to partnering with them in this lifesaving battle," said Fenton-Ambrose. "Standing together, we know we can save countless lives."
