3rd Annual 5K Walk to raise awareness and show support for the lung cancer community; Emceed by NBC's Whitney Southwick
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The 3rd Annual Lung Cancer Alliance (LCA) San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk is a 5K walk that brings together lung cancer survivors, patients, families and friends, among many others, to help raise awareness, hope and a call to action for all those touched by this disease. This year's event takes place on Sunday, May 1, 2011.
LCA's San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk aims to raise the public's awareness regarding lung cancer and more specifically address the common myths surrounding the disease. Proceeds will benefit LCA – the only national non-profit organization that provides support and advocacy for the lung cancer community.
WHY: |
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US—taking the lives of more people than breast, colon, prostate and pancreatic cancers--COMBINED. Lung cancer also kills nearly TWICE as many women each year as breast cancer and three times as many men as prostate cancer. |
However, lung cancer receives the lowest amount of research dollars compared to any other major cancer, due to the common misperception that it is solely a "smoker's" disease. IN FACT MORE THAN 75% PERCENT OF DIAGNOSED CASES TODAY OCCUR IN FORMER AND NEVER SMOKERS. |
No one deserves cancer, smokers or non-smokers. Lung cancer needs to come out of the shadows and stop being the perpetually neglected, forgotten, and "invisible" cancer. |
The San Diego Breath of Hope Lung Cancer Walk is the premiere lung cancer event/walk in Southern California. The event was founded in 2009 by a group of local lung cancer survivors in San Diego, who were once strangers to each other yet were brought together by the common bond of being non-smokers battling lung cancer. Over the past two years, the 5K walk has attracted more 2,000 participants and raised close to $300,000 for lung cancer! |
This year, San Diego Breath of Hope aims to raise more than $125,000. The event offers participants a meaningful and inspirational avenue for supporting the lung cancer community in San Diego and beyond, as well as the opportunity to honor loved ones touched by this disease. |
