Lt. Governor Cawley Decides Against Calling Special Election for Pennsylvania 37th Senatorial District

Seat to be Filled in Nov. 6 General Election

HARRISBURG, Pa., July 10, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lt. Governor Jim Cawley today announced that there will not be a special election to fill the 37th state Senatorial district covering—parts of Allegheny and Washington counties—left vacant by the June 30 resignation of Sen. John Pippy.

Lt. Governor Cawley notified the Secretary of the Commonwealth and the Secretary of the Senate that—consistent with the law governing special elections—such an election would not be in the public interest, given the regularly scheduled election for the full four-year term will take place on Nov. 6.

"After consultations with Governor Corbett and Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati, I have decided against having a special election prior to the general election," Cawley said. "When considering all the factors: the logistics of holding an election and certifying the results, the limited number of session days, and since the voters will be casting their ballots in just a few weeks, the cost to taxpayers does not justify holding a special election."
