Lt. Col. Ralph Peters (US Army, Retired) Challenges Conservatives Not to Flee from Personal Responsibility!
WASHINGTON, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lt. Col. Ralph Peters (USA, Retired) has taken this opportunity of the convening of the new 112th Congress to challenge Republicans not to just reinforce existing prejudices in their congressional debates - thus sticking to party dogma for its own sake - but to do what is right for the country.
Using as an example the conservative reaction to First Lady Michelle Obama's effort to encourage children to eat healthier foods, to improve in-school nutrition and to bring physical exercise back to the playground and school gym, Lt. Col. Peters lambasts Republicans. He says they "argued that kids have a constitutional right to bear arms full of candy bars, chips and cupcakes (leaving, one supposes, little room for textbooks)." Peters states that "encouraging personal responsibility for our health, one of the few worthy initiatives of the Obama presidency," was a good idea and one that should have been supported by every American. As Lt. Col. Peters rightly points out, "Conservatives should be leading the fight to restore an atmosphere of personal responsibility: You are what you eat — not least, when it comes to the burden you impose upon society in general and the health-care system in particular."
He advances the notion that one might even view the rampage of childhood obesity as a national security issue since so many young people are not even eligible to serve in the armed services due to their unhealthy physical condition.
The resulting challenge springs from Lt. Col Peters' hard-learned personal creed and his childhood "in the hardscrabble world of Pennsylvania's coal towns, where hard-working anthracite miners drove the economy." There, a person would sooner starve than ask for a handout but in our present-day world, handouts, sloth and lack of personal responsibility are all the rage.
Carol Taber, president of FamilySecurityMatters.org, where Lt. Col. Peters' article appeared said, "Lt. Col. Peters is an example of the finest that America has to offer, a type of American whom we see less and less of as years go by. It would benefit not only the Republicans but the Democrats – indeed, all of the key players in Washington – to pay attention to his advice and heed it. Indeed, it would be a tragedy if his life lessons were lost to history and not passed on as they are in his powerful article, which will resonate with millions of Americans."
