LSI Wins Kansas Pollution Prevention Award for Second Straight Year
Company recognized for electronic waste recycling and reuse programs
WICHITA, Kan., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced it has received the 2010 Kansas Pollution Prevention Award from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE). In 2009, the company's electronic scrap recycling program recycled almost 10,000 pounds of solid waste.
Kansas Pollution Prevention Awards are given annually to those individuals, communities or community groups, businesses and industries that have made a significant impact on the environment by preventing pollution. LSI was presented with this award on September 13 by Gov. Mark Parkinson at the State Capitol.
"The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is pleased to bestow LSI with a 2010 Pollution Prevention Award," said Roderick Bremby, Secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. "LSI has demonstrated a multi-year commitment to improving the environment."
LSI is being honored for its environmental, health and safety (EH&S) programs, which includes the recycling of batteries, electronic media such as CDs and DVDs. The program also includes recycling electronic scrap generated at its Wichita facility and in the homes of its employees, including computers, circuit boards, CRTs, hard drives and audio/video equipment. The award also recognizes LSI's efforts to reuse as much electronic material as possible within its facility, which helps reduce the amount of waste generated.
"LSI takes seriously its responsibility to help minimize the amount of electronic waste disposed of by the company through recycling and reuse," said Ryan Livengood, manager of environmental health and safety at LSI in Wichita. "We are honored that the State of Kansas has recognized our efforts for the second straight year."
As part of the company's multi-site Safety & Environmental Management System (SEMS), the company works only with vendors and recyclers that are on an approved list of environmental stewards. The formal SEMS process, which resulted in LSI's facility in Wichita obtaining ISO 14001 certification in 2008, helps drive improved environmental performance. ISO 14001 is a standard that establishes environmental management system requirements for organizations.
