Louise Winstanly Named Chair of IntraHealth International's Board of Directors
CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Oct. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- IntraHealth International announced today that Louise Winstanly—renowned bioethicist, attorney and University of North Carolina (UNC) faculty member—has been elected chair of its Board of Directors.
Winstanly brings expertise in clinical, research and public health ethics to IntraHealth's work of empowering health workers and improving health around the globe. Winstanly is an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Public Health Leadership Program at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, an associate faculty member at UNC's Center for Genomics and Society and assistant professor at Union Graduate College's Center for Bioethics and Clinical Leadership. She joined the Board of Directors in June 2011. Prior to that, Winstanly served on the IntraHealth Advisory Council, a voluntary body whose mandate is to support IntraHealth's mission and to steer its private philanthropy efforts.
"What originally drew me to IntraHealth was the organization's commitment to health workers, who are really the essential component of every health care system," said Winstanly. "I look forward to supporting IntraHealth in my new role, and continuing to contribute my expertise and experience to help the organization's mission of ensuring that more people around the globe have access to health workers and high-quality health care."
Winstanly holds a master's degree in bioethics. She also earned a business law degree from London Guildhall University in the United Kingdom, where she graduated with honors. Originally from South Africa, Winstanly has practiced law in London, Tokyo and New York.
"We are privileged to have Louise Winstanly at the helm of our Board," said Pape Gaye, IntraHealth's president and CEO. "Her deep understanding of business, multiculturalism and ethics will be instrumental in guiding our commitment to integrity and excellence in all of our work."
Winstanly is a member of the UNC Institutional Review Board; UNC Hospital Ethics Committee; UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health Advisory Committee; and North Carolina's Translational and Clinical Sciences Institute's Clinical and Community Research Ethics Core. She is also a member of the New York State Bar Association and the American Bar Association, and she is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (Asia).
Winstanly's predecessor Barry Eveland has served on IntraHealth's board since the organization's inception in 2003. Eveland first served as the chair of the finance committee, where he provided invaluable fiduciary guidance and leadership during a period of rapid organizational growth. In March 2010 he became chair of the board, and will continue to serve as immediate past chair for another year.
