"We are proud to announce the Step Up Scholarship for underprivileged students seeking higher degrees in the STEM fields, education, or the arts. It's an honor that A Little Hope Foundation can help ease the financial burden faced by a family with a single parent by supplementing the costs attached to attaining higher education. We believe it's important to give more than a little hope to the scholars and to promote them into becoming leaders in our community. It's important for our society," Hernandez said.
The selection committee is chaired by Susie Hernandez, executive director of programming at PBS affiliate KQED in San Francisco. Committee members are Deborah Hernandez, recreation supervisor for the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (H.A.R.D) in northern California, and Monica Davis-Swallow, supervisor for the County of Sonoma, Calif., Employment and Training Division. All are sisters of Louis Hernandez Jr.
"My family and I have been active in serving the public with an emphasis on underprivileged groups for most of our adult lives, driven in large part by the example provided by our mother, Dr. Emma Lerew," Susie Hernandez said. "The Step Up Scholarship is a continuation of our family's commitment to help others fulfill their goals for a better tomorrow. I'm pleased to be charged with this important effort."
A Little Hope Foundation's Scholarship Program provides up to $10,000 in scholarships annually. Students who meet the eligibility requirements will have the opportunity to receive one $2,500 scholarship a year. The scholarships are granted based upon scholarship, assessment of need and university selection.
