Los Cabos Shows Strong Summer 2017 Tourism Results
New Data Demonstrates Strength and Resilience of Mexico's Fastest Growing Destination
LOS CABOS, Mexico, Oct. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- New data released today from Los Cabos Tourism Board and the Hotel Association of Los Cabos demonstrates the destination's leadership position as Mexico's premier destination for tourism and investment. During the peak summer months starting from June through August, the destination saw a 6 percent surge in hotel occupancy compared to 2016 even as area hotels saw a 21 percent rise in RevPar.
This seasonal performance streak indicates Los Cabos is sustaining an impressive momentum of 20 percent YOY growth since 2015. This year, passenger arrivals in Los Cabos increased 17.3 percent in January through September 2017 compared to 2016. International visitation numbers rose even higher at 17.7 percent during the same timeframe.
"The data sends a strong signal that Los Cabos continues to be an attractive destination for tourists and investors alike that are looking to enjoy the distinct experiences and opportunities we offer," said Rodrigo Esponda, Managing Director of Los Cabos Tourism Board. "As an economy that is driven almost entirely by tourism, we are keenly focused on the factors that matter the most to today's traveler – people, experiences and peace of mind – and we are fully committed to ensure Los Cabos meets their highest expectations across the board."
Facing unique challenges this year due to a wave of natural disasters that impacted top arrival destinations like Houston, Dallas, Miami and Los Cabos itself including Tropical Storm Lydia, the Mexico City earthquakes and Hurricanes Irma and Harvey, the new data underscores Los Cabos' rare strength as a destination where 7 out of 10 visitors are repeat guests and 90 percent of first-time visitors say they would return.
In September, a traditionally slow month for the travel industry and in the immediate aftermath of the U.S. State Department travel warning, Los Cabos remained resilient. The data recorded a 19 percent increase in hotel occupancy considering the growth in hotel inventory by 6 percent over the same period and a steady 70 percent hotel occupancy rate. Overall, hotel rooms went from 14,000 in 2014 to 16,000 in 2017 and 4,000 new rooms are expected to be added by 2021. Additional findings include:
- 29 percent growth in tourist arrivals compared to the same period in 2016
- 36 percent increase in international visitors compared to the same period in 2016
Los Cabos has taken swift and aggressive measures to intensify security measures across the destination, investing more than $47 million dollars to increase security personnel, equipment and infrastructure this year alone. The destination has also enacted a five-point security action plan in a joint private and public sector effort that includes the launch of a new marine base, more than 200 new cameras for its surveillance system, a new hotel security committee, implementing security training protocols aligned with Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) standards and activating a rapid response network for real-time communications between local hoteliers and businesses.
Looking ahead, forecasts estimate Los Cabos will end the year 5 percent up in tourist arrivals.
