Long Term Rehabilitation Efforts Continue in Haiti Eight Years Later
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Feb. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) is in its 8th year of long term rehabilitation efforts in Haiti following the deadly earthquake of 2010. Haiti's history is marred with cyclones, hurricanes, tropical storms, torrential rains, floods and earthquakes. The country never fully recovered from these storms and is in continuous need of humanitarian assistance.
HHRD has been providing relief in the Caribbean since the devastating earthquake of 2010 which killed over 230,000, injured over 300,000 and displaced 1.5 million people. HHRD's Emergency Relief Program organized 59 Rotational Clinics treating over 20,000 people. HHRD's work in the region aimed at long term rehabilitation programs to create lasting change. HHRD's Orphan Support, with 300 registered orphans, continues to provide subsistence, education, health care, social activities and child protection rights to those who have lost one or both of their parents. The Youth Empowerment Program "Youth for Haiti" also conducted five consecutive successful trips which brought college students to Haiti during spring break to work alongside trained staff in the field. They worked closely with orphans, volunteered to rebuild local buildings, helped in medical clinics and distributed relief items. www.hhrd.org/haiti
More recently HHRD's Emergency Relief Team was once again in the region providing aid to Hurricane Matthew victims. Base camps were immediately established in the cities of Port au Prince and Jeremie where the team assembled proper supplies such as nonperishable food items and galvanized iron sheets for distribution. The category 4 storm affected 1.4 million people and claimed the lives of over 1,000. Loss of power, limited food and water, and destroyed infrastructure made it extremely difficult for relief to reach remote locations.
HHRD has been working in Haiti with partner NGOs and HHRD staff and over this 8-year journey have formed an alliance within the local community where they are warmly welcomed. HHRD's donors continue to receive updates from the region which has encouraged them to continue to show their support for this organization.
HHRD is a global humanitarian organization responding to human sufferings in emergency situations around the world regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, class and religion. To donate please visit www.hhrd.org or call 1-888-808-4357(HELP).
