Long Island Home Joins North Shore-LIJ Health System
GREAT NECK, N.Y., July 23, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The North Shore-LIJ Health System today announced that The Long Island Home in Amityville, NY, operator of South Oaks Hospital, a 233- licensed bed behavioral health hospital, and Broadlawn Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, a 320-bed skilled nursing facility, has joined the health system. The agreement has cleared the federal regulatory review process, enabling North Shore-LIJ to establish its 16th hospital in the metropolitan area.
"North Shore-LIJ views South Oaks Hospital and Broadlawn Manor as important additions to the region's largest health system and good news for Long Island," said Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. South Oaks Hospital joins Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, Queens, as North Shore-LIJ's second behavioral health hospital and its first in Suffolk County. With Broadlawn Manor, which has been affiliated with North Shore-LIJ for several years, the health system gains another long-term, sub-acute, rehabilitation presence in Suffolk County. North Shore-LIJ has a few affiliated sub-acute facilities in Suffolk, but as Mr. Dowling notes, "access to this level of care will become more important as the population ages."
Robert Detor, president and CEO of The Long Island Home, said "By becoming a part of the system, The Long Island Home's 131-year legacy of health care service will be strengthened and improved. North Shore-LIJ Health System and The Long Island Home share the same values focused on excellent patient care. We know this new relationship will be good for The Long Island Home and most importantly for the communities we serve."
Mr. Dowling praised Mr. Detor and The Long Island Home's exceptional leadership team, saying both South Oaks and Broadlawn Manor are well-run facilities with knowledgeable staff that understand the special needs of its patients. "We know each other well from working together in the past. This makes sense for both organizations and more importantly for the patients who rely on us," he said.
With the addition of The Long Island Home's 1,152 employees, North Shore-LIJ now has a workforce of more than 44,000 employees.
John Kane, M.D., vice president for behavioral health services of the North Shore-LIJ Health System and chair of psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital, said "Both organizations are committed to improving community access to services and enhancing the continuum of care for people, from children to senior citizens, with behavioral health disorders. These services include psychiatric and addiction services, Alzheimer's disease and other conditions."
The North Shore-LIJ Health System provides inpatient and ambulatory behavioral health services in Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens and Long Island. The health system provides high quality services to patients with both behavioral health and acute medical needs. Zucker Hillside Hospital is known for its pioneering work in diagnosis, treatment and research of mental illness. The National Institute of Mental Health has established a Clinical Research Center for the Study of Schizophrenia at the hospital, one of only four such facilities nationwide.
South Oaks Hospital provides comprehensive treatment and recovery services including acute psychiatric illness and addiction. The facility offers specialized programs for children and adolescents, adults, senior adults, suicide prevention, chemical dependency and substance abuse as well as community-based programs. Broadlawn Manor offers Alzheimer's, dementia, skilled nursing, inpatient sub-acute, outpatient rehabilitation and adult day health programs, as well as, ancillary services.
