KANSAS CITY, Mo., March 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Keith Rosenblum, a Senior Risk Consultant in Lockton's Kansas City operation, will participate in a panel discussion on the challenges legal drug use poses to employers.
Rosenblum will focus on the underlying causes and solutions for employers dealing with employees on chronic opioid therapy and medical marijuana. Rosenblum addresses these issues and puts forth recommendations in his recent white paper, "Red Herrings and Medical Overdiagnosis Drive Large-Loss Workers' Compensation Claims".
"Opioids remain the de facto treatment for most workers with chronic pain," said Rosenblum. "Yet comprehensive reviews of medical literature show chronic pain is frequently caused by the brain itself, making traditional treatment ineffective. We are following and assessing new, innovative models in diagnostic technology that may ensure more accurate diagnosis and treatment."
In his paper, Rosenblum stresses the importance of increasing how slowly neuroscience innovation percolates through the medical community and the workers' compensation system. From a claims perspective, he believes a more recent innovation may reduce larger incurred losses more than 20 percent.
Other panelists include Paul Millus, Of Counsel at Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein P.C. and Dr. Theresa Bartlett, Senior Vice President and Medical Director at Sedgwick.
Dr. Bartlett will address the effects of legal drug use by employees returning to work from a job related injury, while Millus will talk about legal implications of new medical marijuana laws and workplace drug testing programs.
The session is part of the Risk Management Summit 2015 taking place March 4-5, at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York, NY. The panel "Legal drug use poses 'pot holes' for employers" will be March 4 at 2:15 p.m. EST.
